What if the autism diagnosis wasn't an ending, but an opening? In this deeply personal and transformative conversation, multi-award-winning TEDx speaker and author Jolene Stockman challenges everything you've been told about what autism means for your child's future. As an autistic and ADHD adult who initially hoped for "a brain tumor they could take away," Jolene shares her journey from devastation to liberation - and why the prediction model of autism is fundamentally broken. Drawing from both lived experience and her work as a global educator on neurodiversity, Jolene confronts the limiting narratives that shape diagnosis conversations: the "you'll never drive, never marry, never succeed" predictions that ignore the autistic adults who are doing all these things and more. Through candid insights about high-functioning labels, workplace accommodations, and the exhaustion of masking, she reveals how traits labeled as weaknesses - like sensitivity - are actually strengths that make the world better for everyone when we stop trying to force neurodivergent people into neurotypical boxes. This session provides essential guidance for families navigating diagnosis: understanding why telling children they're autistic matters (and how to do it well), recognizing that "special needs" are just human needs, learning why universal design benefits everyone, and discovering how to celebrate neurodivergent identity rather than treating it as something to overcome. Most importantly, discover why your child's diagnosis is not a limitation on their future - it's an invitation to build a life that actually fits them.
